The born-digital works in this collection come from submissions made to ELO for the 2001 Electronic Literature Awards or as donations to ELO by artists. Many of them, like M. D. Coverley’s Egypt: The Book of Going Forth by Day, are demos that appear as updated or more complete versions in other collections in The NEXT. Others, like Tim McLaughlin’s hand-lettered manuscript of Notes Toward Absolute Zero, are rare, one-of-a-kind copies that remained unpublished. All were saved on various types of physical media and so relay an aspect of the history of the field before the mainstreaming of the Web and cloud technologies.
