"Hazel Smith is a poet, performer and new media artist based in Sydney. Will Luers is a media artist and visiting professor in the Creative Media & Digital Culture program at Washington State University Vancouver where he teaches multimedia authoring, creative programming and video production. Roger Dean is a composer/improviser and a research professor in music cognition and computation at the MARCS Institute, Western Sydney University."

"This multimedia work uses HTML5 and the jQuery library to produce an immersive and emotionally powerful experience on the subject of human trafficking. The authors create and assemble images, video, narrative and factual text in multiple languages to generate a carefully constructed soundscape (headphones or good stereo speakers recommended) that combines music, noises, voice, and other audio elements to create a coherent, focused work. Designed for desktop and laptop computers, this is exemplary of interactive, multimedia production in the post-Flash era." -- from Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 3

Experiencing the Work

If using a computer, visitors an navigate the work with the keyboard, specifically directional arrow keys, though the work is not navigable using voice command software; if using a tablet with a capacitive touchscreen, the experience requires swiping input. Cursor movement and click (tap on a tablet) is required in order to hide the progress bar at the top of the screen. There are many passages of text, moving graphics, and sounds for the visitor to experience. The work uses sans-serif fonts and biographies of the creators use fonts smaller than 12px. There are many elements that overlap, play rapid videos, and drift across the background. Some text in the background is difficult to read due to these overlapping elements. There are many sudden and loud sounds that play throughout the work without warning or indication. There are instances of inconsistent volume. Speech, music, and sound effects all play at varying volumes.
