Afterimage

"Afterimage" is a narrative about "a woman who discovers letters and photographs that suggest she has been mislead about her father’s identity. Her real father may, in fact, have been the man she believed was her uncle. In a series of letters before his death in Africa at the end of the war, a strange mystery emerges. The narrator concludes: The reality of the year of 1944, the man, that place, the children in the village - all far in the past:, an inconspicuous, unrecorded history. Yet the materiality of it is the shape of our sorrows - the afterimage of the written plea, the flap of a curtain in the wind, the hum of the African night...
