The Unknown is a metacommentary on publishing: "[f]rom 1998 until 2001, The Unknown wrote a hypertext novel about their book tour for The Unknown: An Anthology, a collection of quality experimental fiction and poetry.
The hypertext novel won an international award, was widely reviewed, taught in universities, became the subject of master's theses in Europe and was read by thousands on the World Wide Web. It is now considered one of the Cult Classics of hypertext fiction.
The Unknown: An Anthology was never published, and the book tour never occurred.
Until now." -- Scott Rettberg, from the booklet accompanying the work
