In mid-1980s reports in mainstream media, the picture of China as a socialist utopia had become clouded by news of economic growth with its inevitable rising interest in consumerism. A contrast is set up between the graphics and topics of two branches: speculating quite playfully about human nature with its elusive goals, and reporting in a straightforward way the reality of the news.
