Conserving Hypertext Art

  • Michael Joyce's Twilight, A Symphony
  • Translated from Storyspace 2.0 for the Web with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript; from English to Polish, by R. Nowakowski, M. Pisarski, J. Jagiello
  • 2021

Considered Michael Joyce's best hypertext novel, Twilight, A Symphony was published by Eastgate Systems, Inc. in 1996 on CD-ROM for Macintosh computers. The work involves 389 lexias and 1337 links and includes over 40 illustrations (photos, hand-drawn color graphics) and several audio clips. A short video titled "apres" and a special font folder accompany the main installation file on the CD-ROM. The work's theme is reflected structurally through an eastbound and westbound story arc. Technological changes resulted in the work to be "stillborn on arrival" (Pisarski, Rebooting, Volume 4). The 2021 Web Edition is a translation of the original into Polish and reconceptualizes the work for the Web.
