Coronation is a webcomic the Marino family has been making since March 18 daily (M-F) throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It features candid and staged snapshots of their lives filtered through various apps and transformed into comic-book pages with captions and speech bubbles edited by Mark Marino's daughter. Coronation is the family's coping strategy, making them authors rather than extras in this global pandemic, reflecting on the immanence of love in their ordinary lives. This selection from volume 6 documents the family's participation in the Los Angeles Pride and Black Lives Matter protests of police violence against Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and too many more.

As the breadth of biodiversity is narrowing, what is the value of Instagram E-Lit and visual storying, in summoning and archiving life-reminiscent forms which are yet to arrive? The following is a portrait and landscape series from digital environs. Sighted through machine learning and selectivity they are also vulnerable to human touch. Simulated ecological kin, take camouflage in organic form, and are endemic to these virtual regions. These images form part of a series of explorations of biologically-proximate forms, drawn from the digital...they churn towards somatic recognition, and mythologise a shared habitat, and waterscape. Populating the digital, they keep wayward company with wild scores of species mourning, and hybrid futures.

The story told over the course of these images is completely true. The project of photographing road surfaces in Cyprus began as a somewhat inchoate joke, pretty much just for self-amusement. It became something else when the hashtags I was using apparently triggered Instagram to send me a message suggesting I might possibly want to take some time for self-care. No human was involved in that decision: it was an algorithmic response, likely a result of machine learning. The idea of having acceptable and unacceptable artistic expressions policed by AI, reminiscent of Newspeak, led to this project.

Waveforms is a speculative instance of 'drone generated poetry', meditating on the role of digital sensors in contemporary environmental monitoring. Here, a Cornish shoreline is photographed using an airborne camera drone. The data gathered is then analysed by a machine vision algorithm that traces the nebulous boundary between wave and shore—a process whose inherent ambiguity exposes the encoded thresholds of the system. The coordinates that define this boundary are then used to look up entries in a lexical database, before printing these alongside the waveline. This particular sequence animates the scanning-lookup process across several image frames.

I Got Up 2020, Pandemic Edition is a visible meditation on time, liveliness, and the everyday. It reinterprets On Kawara's original 1968-79 postcard series as an Instagram account to document home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic from June 2020 to May 2021. During this time, the public sphere collapsed into domestic territory. The distribution of spaces that once stabilized my ongoing— seemingly separate—roles as artist, educator, mother, and partner was no longer viable. In response, this series engages themes of home, habitat, labor, and domestic life. Due to pandemic exhaustion and constant role-shifting, many posts enlist a DIY aesthetic. This is part of a larger project, which may be viewed in its entirety on Instagram @igotup2020.

The island castle in UM is St Michael's Mount, which once sat in a wooded valley. Prehistoric climate change flooded it. There is a legend about a giant who lived there - one of many such - and “Fee, Fi Fo Fum” is the mock-scary shout of the pantomime version. But the words go back to ancient Celtic culture and I think they concern the imminent threat of pitting ourselves against nature, patriarchal "power over" rather than "power with," disconnecting us from our m/other earth, and m/other tongue. When they lit up the castle in changing colours for 'Game of Thrones', the connection seemed irresistible: GoT has changed colour and sold out to patriarchy. Be afraid: "Fee, Fi Fo Fum."
